US warplane lands in a paddock
A US military plane overshot a runway while attempting to land at an Australian military airbase near Perth, eventually coming to a halt in a nearby paddock.
Police said the incident at about 6.30pm (WST) did not result in any fatalities and the sole occupant of the FA-18 Hornet military plane - its pilot - did not suffer any injuries.
The pilot is understood to be under observation at RAAF Pearce airbase, near Bullsbrook, about 50km north of Perth.
The aircraft is one of 20 fighter jets deployed to Pearce airbase for flight training while resurfacing work is carried out on the flight deck of the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
"It was going in to land at Pearce airbase.. it would appear that he's overshot the runway and ended up in a private paddock," WA Police Duty Inspector Garry Kosovich told AAP.
He said the paddock was near Warren Road, about 1.5km from the Great Northern Highway, one of Perth's main arterial roads.
It is believed to be within an area known as a crash grid, which is used to restrain aircraft in the event of an accident.
Earlier reports that the plane had crashed but the pilot had ejected and survived were incorrect, Insp Kosovich said.
A US military spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
An Australian Defence Force spokesman said it would wait to see a report on the incident before comment was made.
A group of 350 US sailors are in Perth to relieve the crew of the destroyer USS Fletcher which is due to arrive in Fremantle, 19km south of Perth, next week.
The operation, known as a `sea swap', involves a ship's crew relieved by a new crew being sent to it rather than the ship returning to the United States, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars for the
local economy.
Not all West Australians are happy with the presence of US ships.
On Wednesday a boatload of prominent West Australians, including Federal MP Carmen Lawrence, attempted to board the USS Abraham Lincoln, docked in Fremantle, to carry out a weapons inspection.
